Beatrice Amaza Howard, Class of 1931, was the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Rochester. Howard was born in New Jersey on March 20, 1909, and moved to Rochester with her family at the age of two.

For 22 years, Della Beatrice Howard, also known as "Bea," was married to Ray Charles, and the couple had three sons. During those two decades plus, however, Charles had five children with five different women outside of the three he had with his wife. Fifty years later, Beatrice Amaza Howard (B.A.'31, M.Ed.'33) was the first African-American woman to graduate from the University of Rochester.
