Even though I can't play a guitar worth a lick, I started out on a baby Gretsch back in '77. The guy that sold it to me missed it so much, he wanted it back. Since he was my mentor and teacher, I couldn't refuse him. I still follow Brian Setzer, who is a Gretsch man all the way, because he does amazing things with Rockabilly. arrangement. Ex-Stray Cats frontman Brian Setzer scored a Grammy for his cover of the Prima/Butera classic "Jump Jive An' Wail." During the swing revival of the 1990s, Mr. Butera was perceived as one of the music's originators. He and his band, the Wildest, enjoyed long, successful residencies in Nevada, Atlantic City and elsewhere, But they are in fact all modern players, even if separated by 2 decades from the 40-somethings (Turner just came around here with Brian Blade, a Wayne Shorter tribute thing…modern as the day is long)…I was reluctant to join this discussion for this reason as there always has to be follow-up justifications & explanations.
